The lore from Nightmare Boy

If anything makes Nighmare Boy different, apart from its unique visuals, it’s the world where the action of this original Metroidvania takes place.

As we progress through the game, we will find characters that will help us find out where we are and why we ended up in Donorok, the world of nightmares. We’re not going to uncover all its secrets, but we do want to reveal part of the mythology that makes the story of little Billy so special.

The World of Nightmare Boy

The universe of dreams is known as Noctum, and is formed by three regions: Klotan, Viken and Donorok. But this was not always the case:

Initially Klotan was created as a point of union between gods and mortals. It was built from the dreams of the most innocent and creative creatures, the children, so it quickly became a joyful and colorful place.

So through dreams, the Gods could know the illusions and worries of those dreamers and try to bring them happiness upon awakening.

Viken, a place of oblivion, was created shortly after by the Gods to make them forget the less important details about their dreams. It became the point of entry and exit between the world of mortals and Noctum.

And finally, a tragic event broke Klotan in two, giving rise to the darkest and most dangerous place: Donorok, the world of nightmares.

And what happened to cause this? Well, that’s already told in the game itself.

The gods who created the universe are Aster, Lady Klormania and Balder. Aster and Klormania formed a family and had three children: Menonia, Peggy and Rolok, the prince of Noctum. And meanwhile Balder… well, Balder had other intentions.

We will also meet these adorable creatures all over the world. They are the Mongos and their mission is to maintain and care for Noctum. They are harmless so try not to kill them… unless you want to get a trophy in the game…

We will find enemies… many enemies, distributed by each one of the zones of the game. And also a lot of impressive final bosses!

And finally there can be no dreams without dreamers. Although in this case these children have been trapped in their own nightmares and are waiting for someone to rescue them… and that someone could be YOU!

Remember, if you’ve been left with the desire to enter the dream world of Nightmare Boy, it’s available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and XboxOne.

Metroidvania: What it is?

“Metroidvania” is a term used to describe a sort of exploratory 2D platforming game. It comes from the original games of the Metroid series and some of the middle-era of Castlevania games (most greatly “Symphony of the Night”, which is what mainly gave birth to the term).

The most defining appearance of Metroidvania games is usually the world. Rather than have set stages or a world map, the entire game takes place inside one giant map, which you must traverse about. Not just any map, but typically a very complex map filled with all kinds of secrets. The map is typically divided into sectors, more in an aesthetic fashion to denote that the denizens and dangers will be different. Sometimes you have teleports to assist you in travel, but other times you just have to remember where to go in the map.
