Operation Overlord

June 6, 1944

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (Allied Campaign)

Better known as the battle of Normandy, it marked a turning point on the Western European front. On January 6, 1944, 160,000 soldiers from the United States, Great Britain, and Canada crossed the English Channel to conquer, under the relentless fire of German machine guns, five beaches, codenamed Utah, Omaha, Sword, Gold, and Juno. Despite the huge number of allied casualties, the operation would mark the beginning of the withdrawal of the German army in France.

Operation Market Garden

September 17, 1944

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (Allied Campaign)

The success of the Normandy landing, though costly in terms of casualties, had emboldened the Allies, determined to give the coup de grace to Germany with the largest airborne operation of the entire war. Their objective was to clear a corridor that would lead them directly to the Rhine. The operation turned out to be an absolute failure, and cost even more casualties than Overlord.

December 16, 1944

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (Allied and German Campaigns)

Despite the advance of Allied forces into the heart of the European continent, the German army attempted to change the course of the conflict with a major offensive, including armored divisions, in the region of the Ardennes (Belgium). Although they caused a large number of casualties, especially among the U.S. army, Germany failed to win, and had to withdraw due to Patton’s army counterattack, low temperatures, and lack of supplies.

Battle of Stalingrad

July 17, 1942

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (Soviet and German Campaigns)

One of the most dramatic and bloody battlefields in all of World War II. The German army was advancing unstoppable towards Eastern Europe, but before heading for Moscow, its objective was to conquer the rich oil fields of the Caucasus. They ended up bumping into a small town on the banks of the Volga. Stalin was unwilling to give up his oil wells or lose a city that bore his name (until then it was known as Volgograd), so he sacrificed hundreds of thousands of soldiers (not to mention civilians caught between two fires) in a 200-day resistance that would end up costing the lives of two million people in civilians and troops on both sides.

Battle of Kursk

July 5, 1943

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (Soviet and German Campaigns)

The biggest tank battle in history. It involved 6,300 tanks, nearly three million soldiers and more than 4,000 planes. A monumental combat in which Germans and Soviets fought to the last man, and which marked the end of Hitler’s aspirations to expand to the East, due to the fierce counterattack of the Soviets and the appearance of a new front to the south of the continent, with the allies invading Sicily. Also known as Operation Citadel, this battle pitted the powerful German Panzer and Tiger tanks against the lighter, but much more numerous, Soviet T-34.

After encircling the capital of the Third Reich, Soviet troops rushed to conquer it, neighborhood by neighborhood, house by house, encountering fierce resistance from defenders, including World War I veterans and members of the Hitler Youth, as well as some decimated Wermacht units. The struggle was dramatic, and the Soviets lost many tanks due to the use of the lethal Panzerfaust grenade launchers.

Operation Barbarossa

June 22, 1941

You can play it on: Sudden Strike 4 (German Campaign)

Although there was a non-aggression treaty between Germany and the USSR, Hitler’s ambition to expand his Reich to the East and that of the Soviets to gain new access to the sea and raw materials that could endanger German supplies (which led Stalind to wage the Winter War against Finland) prompted Operation Barbarossa to be branded. This lightning invasion was intended to conquer the USSR in just a few months, using the power and speed of battle tanks. The famous Blitzkrieg that had given such good results against Poland and France, but Hitler did not count on the harsh Russian Winter (the same one that stopped Napoleon in his day) and the immense number of troops that Stalin had. It was Hitler’s first great tactical error, and he would end up paying dearly for it.

You can play in Sudden Strike 4 (Africa - Desert War)

In 1940 Mussolini launched an offensive against Egypt, then a British protectorate. Not only was it unsuccessful, but it also lost much of its territory through the British’s Operation Compass. One of the most important losses was the Libyan port of Tobruk, which infuriated Hitler to the point of creating a new military force, Africa Korps, led by Lieutenant General Erwin Rommel. The Desert Fox besieged Tobruk for 240 days, although the Germans were not able to conquer it until 1942, following the battle of Gazala.

The Battle of Okinawa

1 April, 1945

Play it on Sudden Strike 4 (The Pacific War)

In the largest amphibious assault on the entire Pacific front, American troops once again suffered the ferocity and resistance of the Japanese. The casualties were heavy on both sides (exceeding the quarter of a million), but the seizure of Okinawa was decisive for the U.S. army, due to its proximity to Japan, so the carnage did not stop until conquering the largest of the Ryukyu islands.
